CARLOS MUNOZ HAT TRICK CARRIES WAVE TO COMEBACK VICTORY

Wave score final 10 points to sweep season series with Baltimore

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Wave kicked off the home portion of their 2013-2014 season tonight against the defending MISL Champion Baltimore Blast at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The Blast and Wave took the field together for the second time this season, and the result was consistent as the Wave topped the defending champions for a second time.

The Blast made sure there was no shut out in the second matchup of these two teams, as an early goal by Stephen DeRoux gave the Blast an early lead. It was DeRoux’s first goal of the season. Shortly after, Max Ferdinand found the back of the net to give the Blast a 4-0 lead. A blue card assessed to Lucio Gonzaga gave the Wave a power play, and Carlos Munoz took advantage, getting the Wave on the scoreboard halfway through the first quarter.

The second quarter started out quiet on the scoreboard, but both teams had opportunities to score. A blue card by Nick Perera (tripping) gave the Blast a power play, but a defensive stand by the Wave left the Blast without a goal during their advantage. Giuliano Oliviero visited the penalty box after the Wave had too many players on the field with just under three minutes left in the second quarter. The Blast took advantage of their second power play in the quarter, as Tony Donatelli gave Baltimore a 6-2 lead. Baltimore entered halftime with a 6-2 lead over the Wave.

The defensive battle continued as it took over six minutes for the ball to find the back of the net in the third quarter. Adauto Neto scored his second goal of the season, giving the Blast an 8-2 lead. Max Ferdinand then added his second goal of the night, as he maneuvered through the Wave defense, to extend the Blast lead to 10-2. JC Banks left the game with 2:29 left in the third quarter with the help of the medical staff. Carlos Munoz scored from 3-point range with 1:14 remaining in the third quarter. It was Munoz’s second 3-point goal of the season. The goal was reviewed and upheld. The Wave were able to shorten the eight point deficit, as they entered the quarter only down five.

A penalty by Pablo gave Baltimore their third power play of the night, but they were unable to capitalize. Later, Blast goalie William Vanzela committed a penalty, sending Giuliano Oliviero to take the penalty kick. A successful penalty kick by Oliviero cut the game to a one-goal deficit. The Wave completed the comeback to tie it up on a 3-point goal by Judson McKinney. It was the Wave’s second 3-point goal of the game. Carlos Munoz completed the hat trick with his third goal of the night, giving the Wave a 12-10 lead with 0:20 seconds left in the game. The Wave hung on to get the win, getting seven of their 12 points in the final quarter.

With tonight’s win, the Wave improve to 4-0 on the season. The Baltimore Blast drop to 1-2; both of their losses have come to the Wave. The Blast finished 1-for-3 on power plays in the night. The Wave now have six of the 16 3-point goals in all of the MISL. The Wave held the Blast scoreless over the final 25 minutes of the game.
