The Major Indoor Soccer League announced its Players of the Month for December on Thursday, with the Milwaukee Wave’s Nick Vorberg taking Goalkeeper of the Month, Rochester Lancers’ Doug Miller being named Offensive Player of the Month and the Syracuse Silver Knights’ Nelson Santana taking Defensive Player of the Month honors.
Selections were based on individual performances in games played through December 31, with nominations being received throughout the month from each team in the MISL.
Vorberg was exceptional as the Milwaukee Wave went undefeated through the month, finishing with a record of 4-0 with a points-against average of 7.0 while averaging 16.5 saves per game. His finest performance came on December 14 against the Chicago Soul, where he recorded 30 saves on 31 shots to lead his side to a 9-2 victory, taking Player of the Week honors in the process.
Miller claimed the league lead in points with a standout month of December that saw him record 16 goals and 38 points. Miller began the month with a bang, recording a six-goal game that tied an MISL record in a 24-17 win against the Missouri Comets, and recorded multiple goals in four other games during the month, including a hat trick against the Milwaukee Wave on December 27.
Syracuse’s Santana performed well not just defensively for the Silver Knights, but also in joining the attack as he helped the side transition quickly to hit opponents on the break. Santana had 18 points in December, including a five-point game against the Milwaukee Wave on December 26, and is now tied for the league lead with 13 assists this season.
The Wave’s Luan Oliveira and Marcio Leite were also named to the Team of the Week as well yesterday. Luan Oliveira earned his second consecutive appearance after an eight-point night led the Wave to a 14-12 victory against the Rochester Lancers last Thursday. He was joined by Marcio Leite, whose five-point night was capped by the game-winning goal with 2:04 to play in a 12-11 win against the Syracuse Silver Knights.
The Wave plays next at home at the U.S. Cellular Arena on Saturday at 6 p.m. Flex pack tickets and individual game tickets are on sale. Visit www.milwaukeewave.com or 414.224.9283 for more information.
