MILWAUKEE (Feb. 4, 2010) - FIFA Women's World Cup champion and Olympic goal medalist Kate Markgraf has been named the technical adviser for the inaugural summer of Milwaukee Wave all-girls soccer camps.
Markgraf, a native of Michigan and resident of Whitefish Bay, will oversee three full-week sessions of girls-only camps. They are June 14-18 at Score Soccer Complex in Racine, June 28-July 2 at the Harry and Rose Samson JCC in Whitefish Bay and July 5-9 at University Lake School in Hartland.
All three girls-only camps offer a primarily female staff. The girls camps will feature demonstrations and an appearance by Kate Markgraf, now a member of the Chicago Red Stars of Women's Pro Soccer. The camps will address specific areas of improvement and experience at a pace that is representative of the women's game. The girls camps will provide the same quality instruction as the other Wave Summer Soccer Camps. Half-day and full-day options are available for all sessions at the standard camp prices. Markgraf will join Keith Tozer, Wave head coach and senior vice president of soccer operations, in setting the curriculum for the camps.
"I'm very pleased to partner with the Milwaukee Wave in providing this unique opportunity to young female players in southeast Wisconsin," Markgraf said. "Sometimes success is all about the right environment, and I believe that combining my experience with the Wave's great track record in a girls-only setting will allow many young players to blossom."
Markgraf will appear at the Wave's final home game of the season, March 20 against Philadelphia at 6 p.m. She will participate in the postgame autograph session on the field.
A central defender, Markgraf has earned 198 caps for the U.S. national team, including all five matches in the historic 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup. The U.S. team defeated China on penalty kicks in the final before a packed house in the Rose Bowl. She also won an Olympic gold medal in Beijing in 2008. As a professional, Markgraf played all three seasons of WUSA for the Boston Breakers (2001-03) and was allocated to the Chicago Red Stars of WPS but missed the 2009 season while pregnant with twins.
"It's great to have Kate, as a national team member and professional player with the Chicago Red Stars, join our summer camp program," Tozer said. "Her experience working with young women will be very beneficial and she will be a great role model."
