MILWAUKEE, WI - The Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) announced Tuesday that Milwaukee Wave defender, Mario Alvarez, has been named Defensive Player of The Week for Week 7 of MASL action.

In Sunday afternoon’s win in Kansas City against the Comets, Alvarez added three assists and two goals to his portfolio in a dominant display of tempo control and two-sided play. This outstanding performance supplements has already been a great year for Alvarez and he’s on pace to have the best season of his 11 year indoor career. He has been responsible for 16 of the Milwaukee Wave’s 54 goals this season, breaking down to seven goals and nine assists less than halfway into the Milwaukee Wave’s schedule.

“Those are the types of games that we want to play, you know, especially away at a crowd like Kansas City,” Alvarez said. Rising to the occasion of the toughest opponents the MASL has to offer, Alvarez has proven time and time again that he’s capable of rising to the occasion, earning his second MASL defensive player of the week honor this season.

When head coach Marcio Leite was asked about the significance of Alvarez’s performance, he mentioned both sides of the field. He had high praises for the veteran defender’s offensive production and lack of defensive mistakes during Sunday evening’s media availability. Alvarez was highly efficient against the comets, his five shots were dangerous, each one hitting the frame contributing to his two goals. His ability on the defensive side is that of a highly technical defensive midfielder. He defended without a foul and, when in possession, was one of the Milwaukee Wave’s most effective facilitators.

“If it wasn't for my squad, that wouldn't be possible… the energy they bring just helps me be better,” Alvarez said. As one of the league’s best playmakers, Alvarez understands the importance of those around him and his gratitude is a testament to his playstyle.

When playing against the Comets, disciplined transition and composure in build-up play are crucial, particularly under Leite’s system. That was exactly what Alvarez brought to an electric battle between two of the MASL’s fiercest rivals—discipline, composure, and production.

The Milwaukee Wave return to UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena to face the San Diego Sockers on Saturday, January 17 at 6:05pm CST as the first half of their home game double header.
