MILWAUKEE WAVE OPENS 2013-2014 MISL SEASON OPENER

Your SIX TIME CHAMPION Milwaukee Wave looked to start the 2013-2014 (MISL) Major Indoor Soccer League season with a little sweet revenge on the Missouri Comets, who dealt the Wave two heartbreaking losses last season in the semifinals of the MISL Playoffs.

The Wave started out the game down 0-4, with goals scored by Missouri within the first two minutes. The Wave got on the board at the 6-minute mark with an amazing 3-point goal by #26 Ian Bennett, the assist for the goal was given to #12 Pablo.  With two minutes left 1st Quarter, Missouri added to their lead with a goal by #14 Leo Gibson, with a perfect pass from teammate #7 Vahid Assadpour. Missouri’s #8 Milan Ivanovic would add another goal with 47 seconds left making the score, 8-3 Missouri after the first period.

The Wave came out strong in the 2nd Quarter controlling the ball, which lead to a great restart goal by #21 Giuliano Oliveira, 2 minutes into the period to cut the Comets lead to 5-8. Milwaukee continued to control the possession game for the rest of the 2nd but could only tally one goal. Wave Goal Keeper #0 Marcel Feenstra fought off a penalty kick with less than a minute to play to keep the score 5-8 after 2 periods.

Within the first 3 minutes of the 3rd Quarter, Missouri struck again with a 3-point goal by #14 Leo Gibson, his second goal of the game. Pushing the Comets lead to 11-5. Minutes later the Wave answered back with a #21 Giuliano Oliveira Power Play goal, his second goal of the game. Quickly after, Missouri answered back with a shootout goal by #19 John Sosa to build to the Comets lead, 13-7. 30 seconds later #25 Brian Harris added his first goal of the season to give Missouri a 15-7 lead with 6 minutes left in the 3rd. Trying to get back into the game, the Wave’s Giuliano Oliviero put in a nice low header pass the Comets GK to make it 9-15. Wave Forward #6 Judson McKinney then draws a penalty 20 seconds later to swing the momentum back to the Comets. That didn’t stop the Wave from adding another goal 42 seconds later by #77 Marcio Leite getting his first goal of game. With the score 11-15, The Wave weren’t done for the period, Ian Bennett stuck again, his second of the game, with 1:30 left in the period to make it 13-15 and all the momentum with Milwaukee ending into the 4 th.

The Wave start the 4th quarter with a goal by #14 Nick Perera, 51 seconds into the period, which ties the game at 15-15. The Comets then finally get back to the scoring column with a two quick goals from #7 Vahid Assadpour and #10 Geison, coming only 3 seconds apart to give the Comets the lead again, 19-15. With the change of momentum to the Comets on their home turf, they tailed another goal with 10:50 from #19 John Sosa, his second of the night. This gave Missouri a 21-15 lead. Milwaukee had to find a way to get back in the match and decided to add a 6th Attacker with over 5 minutes to go. Wave Forward #18 Carlos Munoz found the back of the net for the Wave with a little under 3 minutes left to bring the Wave within 4, making it 17-21. Continuing with the 6th Attacker strategy #26 Ian Bennett completed his hat trick, with his third goal of the night 45 seconds later to make it 19-21. That wouldn’t be the end of Ian Bennett’s night because he scored his 4 th goal of the game with 1:30 left in regulation to tie the game at 21-21 and send the game into overtime!

Overtime… Both the Comets and Wave had chances to win the Golden Goal overtime but it wasn’t until the 12th minute mark that Wave Forward #26 Ian Bennett, the hero of the night, scored his 5th goal of the night! Wave Goalkeeper #0 Marcel Feenstra finished the game with 19 saves.
